Mating Recommendations: TALL STORY

Tall Story is a stakes performing brother to grade one winner and Broodmare of the Year Cara Rafaela, the dam of Champion Bernardini. From the Fappiano sire line, he is by grade one winner and classic sire, Quiet American.

The Fappiano line, including Quiet American, has been outstanding with In Reality line mares, and branches of In Reality that might work here include Believe It, Known Fact, Valid Appeal, Relaunch (sire of Honour and Glory and Slew Gin Fizz).

Quiet American crossed well with certain branches of Northern Dancer, and Tall Story should be a good cross for mares from the branches of Deputy Minister (particularly through Dehere); Nureyev; Sadler’s Wells (including El Prado, Poliglote, Astor Place, Baligh, Dushayantor and Election Day); Northair; The Minstrel; Nijinsky II; Storm Bird, through Summer Squall and Storm Cat (particularly Storm Cat/Mr. Prospector crosses); Northern Jove and his son, Equalize; Dixieland Band; and Last Tycoon.

Tall Story is half-brother to a very fast graded stakes winner by Devil’s Bag, a son of Halo. Other sons of Halo to consider are Saint Ballado (brother to Devil’s Bag), Southern Halo (and sons, including More Than Ready), Halo’s Image, Jolie’s Halo, Halo’s Sunshine and Sunny’s Halo. Halo is a son of Hail to Reason, and that horse could also be introduced through Roberto (via Lear Fan, Red Ransom, Dynaformer, Kris S. and Silver Hawk) or Stop the Music (particularly through Cure the Blues).

Tall Story’s grade one winning sister Cara Rafaela produced Champion Bernardini to A.P. Indy, a son of Seattle Slew. Tall Story should work well when crossed back over A.P. Indy line mares. Quiet American has sired stakes winners out mares by Seattle Slew sons Tsunami Slew and Seattle Song. Other sons of Seattle Slew include Avenue of Flags, Capote (sire of Boston Harbor), Fast Play, General Meeting, Metfield, Septieme Ciel, Slew City Slew, Slew o’ Gold (sire of Thirty Six Red) , Slewpy, Williamstown and Tokatee.

Quiet American has a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Housebuster (by Mt. Livermore, by Blushing Groom), and Mt. Livermore could also work through Orientate. The Blushing Groom line through Rahy (out of a sister to Devil’s Bag) would also work well. Candy Stripes is broodmare sire of Candy Ride from the Fappiano line and is also appealing.

From the Ribot line Quiet American has a stakes winner out of a mare by Badger Land (by Codex, also sire of Lost Code, who would go well here), and a son has a stakes winner out of a mare by At Ease (by Hoist the Flag). Other sources of Hoist the Flag include Alleged, Stalwart, Linkage, Oh Say, Pirate’s Bounty, Firery Ensign and Blue Ensign.
Quiet American has a stakes winner out of a mare by Summing (by Verbatim) from the Prince John line. Verbatim is by Speak John is also sire of Stage Door Johnny, Hold Your Peace (sire of Meadowlake), and Silent Screen. Prince John is also sire of Lefty.

Even though Quiet American is a Mr. Prospector line stallion, he and his sons have outperformed opportunity when bred to Mr. Prospector line mares. There are Quiet American line stakes winners out of mares by Choctaw Ridge, Music Prospector (by Crafty Prospector – who is particularly interesting as he is out of a mare by In Reality), Carson City, and Marquetry (by Conquistador Cielo).

The Fappiano branch of Mr. Prospector through Ride the Rails has done well with mares descending from Good Manners (a genetic relative to the dam of Mr. Prospector). Sources of Good Manners include Farnesio (sire of Interprete), Friul (sire of Engrillado), and Ahmad (sire of Potrillon).

The cross of Quiet American and his sons over mares from the Buckpasser, line has enjoyed above opportunity success. Sons of Buckpasser include Buckaroo (sire of Spend A Buck, Lite the Fuse and Montbrook), Buckfinder, Bucksplasher, Norcliffe (sire of Groovy and At the Threshold; grandsire of Lil E Tee), Silver Buck (sire of Silver Charm), Egg Toss, and Logical (whose son, Parallel, is broodmare sire of a stakes winner by a son of Quiet American).

Conformation: An attractive, well-balanced gray like his full-sister Cara Rafaela and World-Champion Broodmare Sire Spectacular Bid, TALL STORY has the physical qualities synonymous with successful sires; a strong well-defined shoulder, deep heart-girth, short cannon bones and ideal length of hip. His dosage index and center of distribution suggest his offspring should have the ability to carry their speed and perform successfully from middle to classic distances.

Comments: Quote from Mr. Tom Albertrani, Trainer of Tall Story and Bernardini in ’06.

“Tall Story was a very talented colt with a special presence about him. It was a pleasure to train him.”

- TOM ALBERTRANI
